Dr. Mohamad Hassouna started the meeting by welcoming the attendees and thanking the NCCR for their continued interest in serving the disabled in the Gaza Strip.
The head of the communication and advocacy program – Fatemah Al-Ghussain- introduced a worksheet about the different aspects of violence that disabled women and youth are exposed to, mentioning the various forms of family violence, social violence and political violence. Ms. Al-Ghussain asked the families and the society to stop the violence practices, the violation of human rights, the discrimination towards disabled women and the negative perception of these women.
For his part, Dr. Anwar Al-Banna the general manager of Psycho-social support Association spoke about the psychological effects of a disability and the significant psychological problems suffered by the disabled people and their families, emphasizing on the important role of the organizations specialized in psychological and social support for these people.
In turn, Mr Solaiman Al-Farra –the Former Minister of Religious Endowments- talked about the importance of the disabled getting their rights, pointing that a percentage for the employment of the disabled is implemented in the Ministry of Religious Endowments only for males, hence he called for activating the disabled laws on all levels (genders).
Many recommendations were made and the most important were:
• Making advocacy and pressure campaigns for adopting the several issues related to the violence against women, the laws and regulations to protect violated women and to guarantee their rights by adopting equality and non-discrimination laws and respect for the woman.
• Working on the activation of the Palestinian Disabled Law on its different levels.
• Empowering the disabled women economically and providing them with job opportunities.
This workshop comes within the communication and advocacy program’s activities of a National Center for Community Rehabilitation
